Application of the French language charter

By way of the Politique linguistique de l’État (Language Policy of the State – French only) the State is able to play an exemplary and leading role in the application of the Charter of the French Language.

Organizational directive on the use of a language other than French

The Gouvernement du Québec recently implemented a number of measures as part of its modernization of the Charter of the French language. Until the adoption of our own organizational directive, the Directive du ministre de la Langue française relative à l’utilisation d’une autre langue que la langue officielle par l’Administration (French only) prevails.

General principle of the Charter

All our written and oral communications must be exclusively in French. In certain situations, we may use another language. However, this possibility should not lead to systematic use.

Persons covered by the exceptions

  • Persons declared eligible to receive their education in English
  • Indigenous persons
  • Immigrants (for the first 6 months only)
  • Persons who were corresponding only in English with RAMQ before May 13, 2021
  • Persons settled outside Québec

Persons who wish to communicate with us in a language other than French must attest in good faith that they belong to one of these groups.
