If you become a recipient of a financial assistance program with claim slip (carnet de réclamation), you are automatically registered with the Public Prescription Drug Insurance Plan. However, when you cease to be a recipient, you must take steps concerning your drug insurance coverage.
If you become a recipient of a financial assistance program with claim slip (carnet de réclamation), the Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale will notify us and we will register you with the Public Prescription Drug Insurance Plan. No action is required on your part.
When purchasing covered drugs at a pharmacy, you will have to present a valid Health Insurance Card and claim slip (carnet de réclamation).
If you cease to be a recipient of a financial assistance program with claim slip (carnet de réclamation), the Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale will notify us, and we will automatically cancel your public plan registration. You will then have to take certain steps regarding your prescription drug insurance coverage.
Private plans are available through employment or a professional association or order, or else through one’s spouse. If your spouse is covered by a private plan, you must also be covered under that plan, unless you are already covered under another private plan.
If you qualify for a private plan, you must join it, at least for the drug insurance portion. Most of the time, drug insurance is included as part of a plan covering other health care, that is, health insurance plan. Sometimes, this coverage is provided alone.
If you don’t qualify for a private plan, you must register with the Public Prescription Drug Insurance Plan.
There is a maximum annual amount that insured persons may be required to pay for their drug purchases. As a general rule, the private insurer or the RAMQ sees to it that this maximum is not exceeded. However, persons who change insurance plans and believe they will reach their maximum annual contribution before the end of the year must themselves inform their new insurer of the amount of their contributions.
