Register for health insurance Settle in Québec To be eligible for the Québec Health Insurance Plan, you must be in one of the following situations. The same conditions apply to accompanying persons (spouse or dependant). You are in Canada and you are an authorized permanent residence applicant holding an approval-in-principle letter from IRCC. You must contact us to register. Your health coverage will start after a 3-month waiting period following your registration.You have obtained refugee or protected person status in Canada. You must contact us to register. You can benefit from health insurance without a waiting period.You are a government-assisted refugee accompanied by a community organization mandated by the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration. You do not need to contact us: this organization will take charge of your application and send us the required documents. You can benefit from health insurance without a waiting period. If you are a refugee claimant, you are not eligible for health insurance; however, you may be eligible for the Interim Federal Health Program. Registration procedure Step 1 Gather the requested documents You are required to have any documents in a language other than French or English translated at your cost. Mandatory documents: Photocopy of the approval-in-principle letter from IRCC or the decision notice issued by the Canadian immigration authorities confirming your refugee statusPhotocopy of your Québec selection certificate Step 2 Contact us Call us and we will mail you your personalized form. Processing your request You will receive a letter after your application for registration has been processed. This letter confirms whether or not you are eligible for the Québec Health Insurance Plan and indicates the date from which you will be able to benefit from it, if applicable. If you are eligible, you will receive your Health Insurance Card in a separate mailing. There will be no photo or signature on this card. Change of situation If you receive new immigration documents, they may change your status or affect your eligibility for the Québec Health Insurance Plan.
