Permanent resident

A citizen from another country who has obtained permanent residence by immigrating to Canada, but who does not yet have Canadian citizenship. A person temporarily staying in Canada, to pursue studies or work, for example, is not a permanent resident. The permanent resident card is proof that you are a permanent resident of Canada. If you leave the country, you will need it to return.
