‘X’ gender marker on the Health Insurance Card

October 10, 2024 –  As of today, Health Insurance cards with the ‘X’ marker can be produced. This marker refers to non-binary gender identity. Applicants will therefore receive a new card with the ‘X’ marker to reflect their gender identity.

This amendment stipulates that the designation of sex appearing on the health insurance card designates the person’s sex or gender identity if the gender identity does not correspond to the person’s sex.

How do I get a card with an ‘X’ marker?

If you want your Health Insurance Card to reflect your non-binary gender, you must first apply to the Directeur de l’état civil for a change of sex designation. This will enable you to amend your official documents, including your birth certificate.

The Directeur de l’état civil systematically forwards applications to us from persons wishing to change their gender identity. This way we can obtain the necessary information and advise you on the procedure to follow, depending on your situation.

If you already applied to the Directeur de l’état civil

The procedure for obtaining your new card may differ depending on your situation. If it is not already the case, you will receive the relevant information by mail.
